 Kane’s second JC Medal?

Kane’s second JC Medal?

5/09/2008 4:17:00 PM
We have our trophy presentations tomorrow (Saturday) night at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre, and it's a night I think everyone at the club looks forward to as much as any other for the whole year.

For starters, it's a celebration of the positives of the season. Even in such a tough year, we had players who had career-best seasons, made encouraging starts to their careers, stepped up as leaders or showed their willingness to do the team role.

It's good to see everyone from the club, and their partners, dressed up (Toby Thurstans always leads the way with his kit), and with the players all going on holidays for eight weeks or so, and some not rejoining us for 2009, it's a bit of a goodbye, too.

As for the winners, well, I can't go past Kane Cornes for the John Cahill Medal as our best-and-fairest player this season. He won it last year, and, having seen his hard work up close again this year, he would be a deserving winner again. He will have to beat Dean Brogan and Daniel Motlop, though. They've also been unbelievable this year. The voting system is set up so that the coaches can give as many votes between 0 and 20 to as many players as they like from each game. I think it works really well and it means more to the players than any other award because the coaches know our game better than anyone.

For the most-improved award, a lot of young guys could win it but, to me, Tom Logan would be the most likely.

Everyone has really admired "Junkyard" all year and I'd love to see him up on stage collecting an award.

Last year we started the one-percenter award and it was won by Daniel Motlop for his chasing and tackling. He has probably got even better in that area this year so it wouldn't surprise me to see him win it again.

There are two awards for young players. The best first-year player award is for players who have made their debut this year and the Gavin Wanganeen Medal is for all players aged under 21. That will be a tough one because Alipate Carlile and Travis Boak are both eligible. I'll predict a tie!

The hardest award to predict is that of best team man because we have such a strong focus on being "team first". If you forced me, I'd predict Brendon Lade.

I always look forward to the retirement speeches. You'd love to bottle the energy in the room when a great of the club says his final public goodbye. This year we'll hear from Michael Wilson, who will probably be pretty emotional. He's that sort of guy, but I dare say he will not be the only one who's emotional.

Our retiring president, Greg Boulton, will speak, too, and I know he has some amazing stories from trying to get us into the AFL, and he has basically set up the club to where it is today, so his farewell is not to be missed, either.

If you're thinking this all sounds pretty good but what's the point if you're not there, well, the good news is that this year it is being broadcast in its entirety live over the club's website at PortAdelaideFC.com.au. Everyone can watch it so jump online from 7.30 tomorrow night.

14/11/2008 | There isn't any doubt any more about whether Deputy PM, Julia Gillard, has the killer instinct. The problem tends more to be how to drag her off the victim's body.
