Waiting at a corner near Higher Ground for Private Lives to begin, I was intrigued. I didn’t know where or with whom I’d be going. Curiosity and an open mind are essential to get the best experience from this show. Private Lives is a one-on-one experience, which is more confronting than regular theatre, and although it’s interactive, the actors allow you to take part as little or as much as you’d like. The concept was developed by Feast Festival director Daniel Clarke and developed by director Jo Stone and the actors. Alone, you are taken to six different locations around Adelaide with the six actors letting you catch a glimpse of their character’s heart and life.
Each character lives in a different world and, accordingly, you take on different roles. You become the friend, the lover, the witness – and it is particularly interesting to watch yourself react to situations and questions. The actors are fantastic at drawing you into their lives, touching on topics such as love, death and dreams. In particular, Nick Pelomis had me transfixed with his character’s unfortunate story, while Chris Scherer put himself on the line with an open and vulnerable character. Private Lives will give every person an individual experience, but for me it was at times humorous, moving and thoroughly entertaining. Private Lives runs from Higher Ground until November 26.
